General Process of Research

Research paper writing is an important part of a student’s work. All students will have to undergo this task regardless of their major or the courses that they are taking. It can be physics, geology, sociology, psychology or even political science. Research is an indispensable part of these courses.

It is therefore important for every student to understand the general process of research. There are many interpretations about the general process of research. However, these interpretations boil down to four important stages: preparation, reflection, hypothesis and verification.

The preparation stage is the stage of consciousness to the presence of a problem or question that need to be answered. At this stage, the researcher is curious about a specific problem and seeks to explore the problem to find answers to his questions. It can be about the question of why does man commit crime? Why do most married couples end up in divorce? At this stage, the researcher begins to determine the parameters of the problem and to understand the problem from different angles in his attempt to find solutions to his research problem

The second stage is reflection. The reflection is the stage where the researcher reflects and meditates upon the problem. For researchers, it is essential for them to ponder upon the research problem for a sufficient amount of time so the subconscious can further explore the problem and deal with it. For most researchers a creative solution is reached when they give themselves sufficient time to ponder about a certain research problem

The third stage is hypothesis. Hypothesis is the stage where the researcher comes up with his own proposed solutions to the problem. The goal of research is not only to be able to understand the problem but also to be able to find potential solutions to the problem. They stage of hypothesis is the researcher’s own way of finding solutions to his research problem.

The fourth stage is verification. Everybody has his own hypothesis about his research problem. But the hypothesis will have to be tested and verified before it can be accepted in the academic community. There are many ways of verifying whether the hypothesis is correct which can be done by experimentation or a simple observation. If the hypothesis is verified to be incorrect, researchers sometimes go back to the third stage to examine other hypothesis. Sometimes, it is essential to go back to the first stage of preparation before researchers find the answer to their research problem.
